Jaxon Stickler
Artist/Designer

Assisting with deep visions for Other systems and new futures through building core artefacts.

Jaxon seeks to create works that blur the bounduries between human and non-human, organic and inorganic, self and other, initiating the destruction of hierarchichal binaries.

He aims to inspire clients and audiences to rethink their roles and responsibilities in a complex and interconnected world.

Open to collaborative projects as well as offering creative direction & design research services.

Lightshrine 1-6 2024
Object

A system for building low-light ritual behaviour.

Switching a light on once the sun goes down is a habit engrained into modern life. This object aims to grab this focus and redirect it towards cultivating new protocols of interdependence. These practices can range from simple acts of attention and observation to more complex forms of ceremony and performance.

Crafted from Japanese washi, each delicate sheet is lasercut and soaked in beeswax. The form is meticulously stitched and tensioned into the semblance of a bulb and bound together by folds of oxidised metal. Mount on a vertical surface, preferably above a position where offerings can be made. Electrical soldering and wall mount system by Designer Haoqi Hong.

A burnished construct.

USBKill Charm 1-3  2024
Object

An imbued weapon for enacting violence against biosphere harming infrastructure & technology. This jewelry piece destroys the circuitry of the equipment it is plugged into.

Comprised of hundreds of intricately modeled platelets forged from laser-sintered aluminum. Embedded within these plates lies a USB killswitch device. Developed by Russian computer researcher Dark Purple it draws power into its capacitors and repeatedly sends a high-powered voltage surge back into the datalines of the device it is connected to.

Dyneema Sk87 Bio-based HMPE Fibres are handwoven into Nejiri Gumi Kumihimo by artist/designer Celina Samarakoon, forming the cord that connects this artifact to its wielder.

A machine amulet.

Protection Pocket Bag 1-3 2024
Object

A soft artifice concerning the creation of sacred time for rest & play by blocking phone signals.

A mobile communication device placed within the bag will be rendered obselete as military grade copper coated fabric provides full electro-signal blocking capabilities. The pocket can be used to impede signals, disrupting the flow of information, a shield against the brutal onslaught of data aimed at deafening our attention span.

The outer surface of the bag bears witness to the passage of time, its mineral hues evolving. Three custom made buckles designed in collaboration with Eli Kemp and Joey Tussler line the edges.

A shielding device.

BigChicken 2024
Sculpture
(Sticks, Deadstock Wool Fabric, Motorcycle Crash Armour)

As the globe’s most abundant vertebrate, the broiler chicken is exclusively sourced from two corporate entities. Various breeds are distinguished by names like Cob 500 or Ross 308. These avians are but shadows of their ancestors, their once-proud lineage warped and contorted. Their frames, swollen to grotesque proportions, buckle under their own weight, rendering them unable to walk without aid in most circumstances. Studies have found that the greatest factor impacting a chicken’s welfare is its breed—a bodily prison and curse etched into its being at the genetic level.

What might it look like for genetic agency to be restored to a species whose lineage has endured two mass extinctions? What tales would they tell, what songs would they sing, and what vengeance might they exact if given the chance to reclaim their birthright?

GUIDING WYRM CORE SIGNALS 2024
Exhibition

Experiments in Sculpture, Design, Film & Sound for Non-Human Realms by Chloe Newberry, Jaxon Stickler, Raphael Lindzhendao & Indi Jennings

Funded by The City of Melbourne

Group Statement:
Our combined efforts explore mythic forms, ruined space, creaturely bodies and earthly constructs.

Non-human revenge narratives catalyze to dismantle entrenched hierarchies that mold the world.

Post-humanist tendencies emerge.

Eroded metal plates pulse with vibrations of regional terrain they map.

Methods & outcomes intercept invisible signals, raw intuition drives padded shapes and electro signal-blocking fabric turns to stone.

Our drones hover within the crust of the earth.

Dark Ecology 2022
Capsule Collection

Dark Ecology is about finding new ways of being in the earthly realm through studying patterns of creation. Dissolving binary notions and barriers between technology, nature, culture and spirit, and developing clothing that is functional for movement, play and experimentation through landscapes.

Dark deadstock nylons receive precise computer-generated cuts, organic textures being revealed underneath. Reclaimed Mohair blankets are puffed up and bestowed with a nameless symbol. A primordial relatedness to the more than human worlds lurks just beneath our modern systems.

A heavily overdyed T-shirt dress, digitally printed with complex instructions, a map of human interactions with a glacial boulder. Single threads hanging from marked locations, a snapshot in deep time.

A dark hulking form emerges from intuitive draping and instructions gathered from field study within cold temperate rainforests. A Hyper-Organic spectral being.

Micro-Capsule 2022
Clothing

The scale we live at is so far removed from geological agency that it is hard for us to relate to rocks as anything other than scenery. I wanted to combat this separation from the complex natural systems we are embedded within by developing a material language for new ways of being in the earthly realm - clothing that is functional for movement and experimentation through landscapes & garments that honour the mineral crust that birthed us.

Portal Dress 2021
Clothing

This garment started with a pilgrimage to visit an ancient tree entity of the species Athrotaxis cupressoides, the Pencil Pine. Endemic to my home in Tasmania they live to be thousands of years old and can exist within Deep Time.

I began to survey its spatial features through images to begin forming a 3D digital re-creation.

I then developed an //ENVIRONMENT--EXPERIENCE// map from this process. Taking into account landscape features and surveyance positioning.

Afterwards printing the map onto fabric, overdying silver&grey then constructing a dress.

This garment holds knowledge of place within it and grants the wearer access through space&time to its origin landscape.

Field Study 01 2021
Research

A patchwork of primary visual research and digital experimentation. An exploration of place+spirit and how we interface with landscape once removed from its surface.
Field Study 01 begins with a pilgrimage into the SW of TAS to explore Ambience in Landscape through a series of short   visual studies taken with my digital camera. These focus upon landscapes within the Denison Range sourounding Lake   Rhona, on Lutrawita Country.

Once returned from the location this visual information was then Abstracted/Interpreted/Deciphered. Further research   of place was conducted through digital tools such as Geographic Information Systems, color processing software and   Adobe AI tools. This research was done once removed from the landscape, and so these digital tools allowed an   interfacing with place through a different perspective.

I then used CLO3D to begin a series of design experiements that sought to store this infromation within garment   archetypes. This process seeks an understanding of the landscape and environment through analysis and re-   interpretation. It pokes and prods at various systems that exist within the landscape but are hard to define with the   naked eye, searching to generate new biases and language with which to value the natural world beyond its perceived   beauty.

The final result culminating in a digital entity that holds Knowledge of Place, through its re-structuring of information into garments.
